Sometimes, We Just Need a Little Joy :)

The other day, I was on the Tube when I suddenly heard someone singing.

A sweet little voice, singing in a language I couldn’t quite place. French, perhaps...

And loud.

Loud enough for everyone in the carriage to hear, in an otherwise completely silent Tube.

Confident. Completely unapologetic.

We all started looking around, trying to figure out where the voice was coming from.

And there she was: a tiny little girl, probably around four years old.

With her mum, presumably on their way to school.

At first, I think we were all a little annoyed. There was not a sound in the carriage except for this little girl singing.

But she didn’t care.

She kept going.

And whenever she made eye contact with someone, she seemed to sing even louder.

After a while, though, I think that cheerful little melody started to do something to all of us.

I caught myself smiling.

Then I looked around and realised I wasn’t the only one. Lots of people were smiling.

Some were even quietly singing along.

Just like that, the whole atmosphere in the carriage changed.

It was as if we had all been missing a little bit of that kind of joy.

The silent authority of a four-year-old who simply refused to care about our boring, monotonous Tube ride did us all some good.

By the time I got off, I swear I was in a better mood.

But I can’t prove it :)

Why You’re Working Hard but Still Not Getting Promoted?

We work hard.

We stay late.

We take on every task that comes our way.

We do our best to fill the role we’re in.

And naturally, we start thinking: I’m ready for the next level.

But somehow, the promotion we’re expecting never comes.

Why?

Because promotion decisions aren’t based on hard work alone.

They also depend on how visible we are, the impact we create, and whether we demonstrate the potential to lead.

So, how can we increase our visibility at work?

I’ve put together 6 practical ways. If you’re waiting for your next promotion, these might help:

1. Say yes to presentation opportunities
- Start with your own small team.
- Volunteer for bigger meetings.

2. Be an active participant in meetings
- Ask questions.
- Share your ideas.
- Suggest solutions.

3. Ask for feedback
- Seek input from your manager, HR, and other influential leaders.
- Ask what skills and behaviours you need to demonstrate to be ready for the next level.

4. Make the most of the resources available to you
- Learning platforms
- Mentoring programmes
- Cross-functional projects

5. Make your work visible
- Take an active role in projects.
- Share your results and achievements.
- Build relationships with other leaders.

6. Try to see the bigger picture
- Keep track of the company’s goals.
- Understand how your team’s priorities connect with those of other teams.

These steps may seem simple, but they can make a big difference and help you become much more visible.

Because career progression isn’t just about what we do.

It’s also about the impact we create and how that impact is perceived.

Ok, Don’t Rock the Boat, But Can You Lead?

You can be a very successful manager without ever becoming a leader.

I was reminded of this recently while catching up with a former colleague.

We found ourselves laughing about some of the memories we shared, including one senior manager we both remembered very well.

Despite the size of his role, he was the kind of person who never challenged anything, no matter how ridiculous it was. He always seemed focused on keeping everyone happy.

His attitude was very much: “Let’s keep things as they are. Don’t rock the boat.”

Can you become a manager by behaving like that?

Of course you can.

As long as things keep moving and nobody complains, no one really objects.

But can you become a leader?

Will people look up to you? Trust what you say? Follow you because they believe in where you’re going?

I highly doubt it.

To me, a good leader should be able to offer different perspectives and ask the uncomfortable questions everyone else would rather avoid.

That’s how you create space for change.

Not by trying to meet everyone’s expectations and preserve the status quo.

If our goal is to be popular, get constant applause, and make sure everyone likes us, we might get through the day.

But we won’t create lasting impact.

Maybe it’s worth taking a moment today to look at our own leadership.

Which side are we closer to?

The Cost of Perfection!

“I never hung a painting because I was afraid it might be a bad one.

I never lived because I was afraid I might live badly.”

Oğuz Atay wrote this in The Disconnected.

I’m certainly not going to attempt a psychological analysis here.

But I can’t help wondering:

How much are we missing while chasing perfection?

Don`t Wait Life To Get Quiter!

“Once this is over, I’ll finally be able to relax.”

Once this busy period is over...

Once I hand in this report...

Once I finish cleaning the house...

Once this project is done...

Once I get through these guests...

Then, finally, I’ll sit down and read a book for hours.

I’ll start working out regularly.

I’ll make more plans with my friends.

I’ll try all those recipes I’ve saved.

And so on...

But here’s the bad news:

Things never really get finished.

As soon as one thing is done, another one takes its place.

And the more we postpone living until we reach the end of our to-do list, the more that “right time” keeps slipping away.

That’s why we need to learn how to make room for the things we dream about while everything else is still going on.

Don’t wait for life to get quieter.

Don’t wait until everything is checked off your list.

Make room for what matters to you now.

Read a few pages. Take that walk. Call a friend. Cook that recipe. Take the first small step.

Because the perfect time may never come.

But this moment is already here.

And time, whether we’re ready or not, keeps moving.

Life Loves Movement

Life loves movement...

But what do we do?

We keep passively saving everything.

Instead of getting into the kitchen, we watch cooking videos.

Instead of trying something out with our team, we save the best leadership talks.

Instead of opening an AI platform and actually playing around with it, we save the most successful prompts.

We watch someone else walk along the Amalfi coast, or save workout videos for the day we’ll “definitely” start exercising.

Career advice, recipes, travel itineraries, workouts...

They’re all there.

But there’s no movement.

And let’s be honest, we don’t even go back and look at most of them.

Maybe today, instead of saving something new, it’s time to take one of the things we’ve already saved and actually do something with it.

After all, life loves movement.

Talent Needs a Good Manager

When we work with good managers, moving forward in our careers can become so much faster and easier.

And by “good manager,” I don’t mean someone who is simply friendly, kind, or easy to get along with.

I mean someone who can recognize potential.

Think of a high-quality leather jacket, for example.

Before it becomes the finished piece we love, the leather goes through a long and delicate process. Conditioning, working, polishing…

Even the finest leather can be ruined if it isn’t treated properly. The right techniques need to be applied at the right time.

It takes patience. It takes care.

Just like a high-potential employee.

Without the right manager, that potential can easily get lost along the way.

A good manager recognizes your potential almost instantly. They give you room to grow. They make time for your development and give you meaningful feedback. They let you make mistakes.

And sometimes, they bring out strengths in you that you didn’t even know you had.

In my 20 years of experience in HR, and through countless coaching conversations, one thing I’ve seen again and again is this:

Many high-potential employees don’t shine simply because they are talented. They shine because they have the right manager.

If you have a good manager, know that you’re lucky.

So, are you working with a manager who sees your potential?

Or are you still looking for one?

What If They’re Wrong?

Sometimes we share an idea or a dream with someone and ask what they think, don’t we?

And of course, asking for another perspective is a good thing.

Every opinion has value.

But most people can only see as far as they’ve been themselves.

They give advice based on their own experiences, their own journey, and the world they know.

So when someone tells us, “That won’t work,” or “That’s too difficult,” maybe it really isn’t possible in their world.

But why shouldn’t it be possible in ours?

That’s why, when we share a dream with someone, it’s worth thinking about the road they’ve travelled, what they’ve experienced, and what they’ve seen along the way.

Because, in the end, everyone can give advice.

But the real question is: Will that advice encourage us to take the first step, or will it make us hesitate?

Perfect Is The Enemy of Good

“Perfect is the enemy of good,” Voltaire once said.

What a brilliant metaphor.

Because in our pursuit of perfection, we often end up putting off taking action.

We spend so much time trying to make a presentation, a dinner party, or a holiday plan absolutely perfect that, before we know it, we haven’t even started.

I wouldn’t call myself a perfectionist, but even so, I really struggled with writing this post.

It’s only a few lines, yet I wrote it, rewrote it, deleted it, ran it through AI, added things, took things out…

And in the end, it may not be perfect, but here I am.

Because there’s no such thing as “good enough” when you keep chasing something better.

There will always be a better version, a prettier one, a more polished one.

So, don’t wait for the perfect moment to take action.

Because life isn’t waiting.

The Person You Are is Unavailable!

The person you are trying to reach is currently unavailable.

Because they’re busy.

Maybe they’re in a meeting.
Maybe they’re rushing somewhere.
Maybe they’re running late.

Always on the move.
Too busy to listen.

If you ask, we’re all connected.
But somehow, we can’t reach one another.

Everyone has something to say.
But no one seems to have the time to listen.

To sit across from someone, put your phone away, and truly listen to them may be one of the hardest things to do today.

We no longer have enough silence to make room for someone else’s voice.

So, once again…

The person you are trying to reach is currently unavailable.

The signal is strong.
The internet is working.
The phone is on.

But somehow, we’ve lost the ability to truly reach each other.
